Barking is common canine behavior. All dogs bark, some more and some less. However, this reasoning is not likely to pacify your angry neighbors and sleepless relatives. They will be very upset if your dog barks at the wrong time, all the time. It is also not fair to expect your dog to become silent, but you can turn down the volume.
Most problem barkers are bored. When your dog is too accustomed to attention, it will resort to barking when alone. In fact, we often create this problem ourselves. We want our dogs to be happy so we pet our dogs, indulge them and take excessive care of them. This is common owner behavior. But then, when the dog is alone, he does not know what to do with himself, so he barks to attract attention.
Your dog must be taught that barking does not attract attention. For instance, if he wants to go for a walk and starts barking to let you know and you fall in line, your animal will figure that barking helps attract attention. Doing just the opposite of what your dog wants when he is barking might be helpful. Ignore your dog will make him understand you are not in the least impressed by his barking. Shouting does not help at all; in fact it produces negative results. A good master controls the dog by the tone of his voice. Command your dog to be “quiet” in a calm but firm voice and he will probably listen to you. Supplement this with praise when he does as he has been told.
Most dogs bark when they are away from their owners. Make sure that you have covered the essentials by giving your dog plenty of food and water and toys and a comfortable place to rest.
Be a good role model. A dog does not understand human language, but he responds to the way you deliver a command. If you are impressive, you dog will probably listen to you. Do not reward or praise your dog more that it deserves. When it obeys a simple “sit” command, a pat on the head is good enough. Do not overdo things or your dog will be spoilt.
Your dog’s bark may be worse than his bite, but if you spot him clenching his teeth while he is barking, he is getting ready to bite someone. This is a severe problem and going to the vet is advisable./p>
Tips to stop your dog from barking:
If none of this works, there may be a cause for concern. Consult your vet to find out if your dog has any undiagnosed problems. Otherwise, constant training should do the trick.
